But if any of you want wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all men abundantly, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. James 1:5, Douay-Rheims

Hannah was a senior in high school. She had good grades and she’d been accepted into several colleges. They were all excellent schools and she knew she’d be happy at any of them. But she didn’t know which one to choose.

When she asked her dad for advice, he said the same thing he always said. “Ask God for wisdom, pumpkin.”

Hannah sighed but sent up a prayer. “God, I could really use some help making this decision. Wisdom would definitely make this easier!”

Then Hannah waited. A few weeks went by with seemingly no answer. Each day that passed made Hannah feel more anxious. Where should she go? Did God not hear her prayers for help?

Hannah was with her mom, shopping for groceries, when an old family friend greeted them. Her mom introduced the woman as her best friend from elementary school. As the two women talked, the topic of college came up.

Her mom’s best friend mentioned she had attended the college that Hannah liked and told her about her experience there. As she talked, her mom’s friend told such vivid stories that Hannah knew that’s where she was meant to go.

Like Hannah, you may be wondering what your next step should be. Ask God for wisdom to guide you during this time. Sometimes he answers such requests for wisdom and guidance directly, showing you which way to go. Sometimes you have to pray and then step out in faith. God’s answer may only be obvious in hindsight. But God is generous and loving. He will always answer a prayer for wisdom when you seek His will for your life!

Reflection Questions: For what decisions could you use God’s wisdom and guidance right now? How easy is it for you to abandon yourself to God’s will and providence? What makes it difficult for you to trust?
God, I need wisdom. I have to choose between different paths and I’m not sure what to do. Please show me what direction I should go.
