The architecture of a church building is meant to elevate our hearts and minds to Heaven. That’s why traditionally Catholic architecture has been so grand and ornate. the same is true for the interior of a church. Before the modernist iconoclastic movement after Vatican II, the interior of any parish church was designed to help parishioners think about divine things. Today, that may or may not be the case. When members of your parsih pass through the doors of your church and take a seat on Sunday, what are they inspired to think about? When they glance around the room, what catches their eye? Whether a striking statue or a bright candle, the right supplies can be meaningful additions to your church’s environment. Here are three examples that will give you and your fellow parishioners a glimpse of heaven.

Candles for Devotion

Often lit to represent prayers, candles can act as symbols not only of loved ones in need but also of the hopeful light of Jesus Christ that cuts through the darkness of sin and death. The flame of a candle reflects God’s refining fire as well as the energy and power of God’s spirit. The consumption of the candle and the fact that we pay for their use are a sacrifice to empower our prayers. Coming in bountiful shapes, sizes, colors, and containers, church candles are peaceful to behold and inspire reflection, devotion, and prayer.

Statues for Introspection

Statues of stone, wood or metal inspire like little else. Whether created in the likeness of well-known saints or child-like angels, statues can call to mind biblical stories and, in doing so, represent perseverance, faith, and the provision of God. A well-placed statue can offer a much-needed reminder of grace and love as members of your congregation contemplate the day’s Scripture readings and homily.

Music for Inspiration

One of the most challenging things today is to keep young people involved in church. However, finding the right Christian music for youth Burlingame CA can keep them coming out and participating in prayer events and in youth group. While most music that appeals to youth isn’t necessarily appropriate for the Holy Mass, it can still play an important role in youth events. In addition, good Christian music can help young people throughout their lives as they search for inspiration and comfort. Music can speak directly to the soul and makes gospel messages easier to remember.

A Place To Worship

The modern trends in architecture have not served us well. We need to recapture the ancient tradition of building church exteriors and interiors that lift our hearts and minds to God. The right church environment can help us enter more fully in the Mysteries of the Faith. It can aid our prayer and contemplation. It can, and should, remind us of the grandeur of God. How does your parish do?
