Raising children to follow Christ can seem like a daunting task. How can you simplify these hard-to-grasp philosophical concepts to your tiny son or daughter when there is no roadmap to follow and no signs pointing the way. However, if you and your spouse are shining God’s light in your home, your children can learn so much about Jesus’s love through your everyday actions. Here are a few key moments that you can use to teach your children about God.

1. Show God’s Love

The most important step should be the easiest. By unconditionally accepting and loving your children, you are showing them the power and strength of God’s love. This simple truth should dictate most of your choices around your children. When complicated situations arise (and they will), control your temper, never react verbally or physically through anger, and pray for the Holy Spirit’s guidance in discipline. These steps are imperative in ensuring your children grow up learning how Christians should deal with tough situations.

2. Use Teachable Moments

Use challenging moments to teach your children about God’s love and infinite wisdom. When your child sins, use it as a chance to teach about God’s forgiveness. When your child witnesses darkness through secular media, use it as a chance to teach about man’s separation from God. In these moments, asking open and honest questions can help your child start to form their own opinions about their faith while giving you a chance to learn where their relationship with God stands.

3. Don’t Do This Alone

When your child was baptized, there was a joint promise made by the entire congregation to aid the infant in maintaining their faith. Sending your children weekly to Sunday School, or enrolling your children in a Christian elementary school can help cement their relationship with God.

At the end of the day, the most important job you have as a parent is to love and cherish your child unconditionally. There is no perfect guidebook teaching how to lead your child to Christ. Each child’s journey is different, special and unique. Make sure to listen with your ears and heart as doing so will foster important conversations that will stay with them for years to come.
